Seen over a nest 145 ft up a Jeffrey Pine in Big Bear, California. This is the best possible image as it was moving so fast. Any input is appreciated. This thing must be several inches long...

Additional info - it was flying from right to left in this photo.

I’d say it is jumping lizard Thank you for your suggestion. I looked up flying & jumping lizards and do believe it is not one of those as this was propelled by beating wings, very fast.

Poor lighting, blurry image, no scale for comparison. I think it's unlikely anyone will be able to provide a solid ID. Suggestions are going to be wild guesses.

Perhaps our new member is pulling our leg.
This reminds me of the photos taken of winged rod shaped creatures purported to be new creatures only seen with high speed film.

TOM That's exactly what I thought TOM, one of those "rods". Now I have to look up and see how tall a Jeffery pine tree can get... sounds a little "high".

TOM Haha, no not pulling your legs. I've seen it several times just after sundown. This is a live cam of a bald eagle's nest. The chat mods there say it's a moth & that the night vision affects trying to get a screen capture. Slowed the video speed to .25 and went frame by frame with the < & > keys. It was moving so fast. I too thought of a "rod", having seen a special about them many years ago. If you'd be interested, I cut this image from a larger picture. The nest is 5 1/2 ft across and the camera is directly at the side of the nest, not a distance off.

Ok……my wild guess is an orthopteran of some sort. Perhaps a mantid, grasshopper, or katydid. Something abt the shape reminds me of orthopterans on the wing. Just my guess.

I think it could be a moth. The night vision and camera speed are causing some kind of double exposure, making it look longer, it is weird that an insect would be around the same spot for more than 1 night, maybe it's just a bat..at least we know it's not a "rod"-

I'm looking at the blur shape to the left, and ignore the torpedo ("rod") shaped thing to the right.
In looking at the leftmost element, I can make out a thorax, four wings, and antennae. From that aspect, it appears to be shaped like a catocala or eacles. Why the left FW is cocked back I cannot say, nor would I expect that in normal flight. Further, the "wings" on the "rod" appear to be heavily apexed; they are the same size as the wings on the leftmost shape; if so, certainly wings in motion twist, which could account for the pointed appearance.
This could be a figment of the photo, or it could be accurate. I do not know.
