Actually moths and butterflies don’t spread wings in flight at 90° to the body. They are creating straight line along the upper edges of the forewings. In the slow motion videos one can see when they take off or maneuver than they are stretching them at 90°.

Thnx Trehopr1. First…..my measurements were from wingtip to wingtip including the body w FWs at 90 degree angles…..just like the wingspan of a plane or bird. Female A. caesar was 226mm wingspan Female C. hercules was 186mm wingspan Female C. hercules length was 227mm Here is a drawer of H. cecropia. Many more US drawers are ready for posting if that’s ok. Don’t want to ruin thread or take up too much space.

Thank you sincerely bill for taking the time to get those measurements for me. That is indeed the largest Attacus I have ever seen or heard of !
Just an abject "monster-sized" example of the species. Incredible ! and, what a find indeed.
Your US holdings are just "boggling" and the variation present in each drawer is enviable !
Please, do keep the pics coming of your US material because it is a real treat. Few personal collections ever have such extensive holdings; unless they come from a specialist.

This is the largest female I have of C. hercules. I'll post measurements taken in multiple ways! Wingspan in spread position as seen in photo = 225mm Single forewing measurement from joint to tip = 130mm Single hindwing measurement from joint to tip = 134mm Maximum wingspan (with forewings) possible including width of thorax (forewings dropped) = 277mm

Fantastic specimen !!
If it is bigger than the one I have then it is the biggest one I know of in a private collection...
What a find you have there.

I have to say that I still find your pictures absolutely stunning !!
I know you said you use the iPhone 11 but, I still can't believe you get photographs with such clarity and depth from it.
It must be your lighting or something ??
I swear I'm going to make a picture album from some of the photographs you have posted.
Awesome and beyond belief from a device that anyone can buy.

Thank you trehopr1! The C. hercules was actually taken with an iPhone 13pro that I just got, but the lighting was truly poor. It could have been a lot better with good lighting - I almost didn't even use the photo! Usually I simply bring specimens into my kitchen where I have the brightest ceiling lights (nothing special though). However the hercules was just taken in a room with fluorescent lights, and not all that bright - I was too lazy to bring it to the kitchen! It is reduced considerably though for the forum as they all are. Anyways all of the other moth photos were taken years ago with either an even older phone or a rather cheap point and shoot camera - never anything special. The beetle photos are the ones which were taken with the iPhone 11pro. I never thought of any of them as being that special lol. Again I'm just happy if they are enjoyed and it's fun to share! This new iPhone has some macro ability I'm anxious to try. Nothing like a high priced specialty camera but pretty good for a phone I've heard!
