That was all unexpected. We need a few guidelines here, and since the top 3 controversial topics were banned some while back, it's been peaceful, free speech does have limits- I have personally prevented it from in front of my house, go too far and some one may decide they'd like some quiet. This is as close to social media as I get, it'll be a sad day indeed if it should ever disappear.

vabrou < please respect our rules (no politics, no religion, no insults, no commercial announcement on the forum) or your post WILL be kindly edited/deleted by the moderation team. These rules are easy, they are the same for all, and we only have 2 or 3 members who have difficulties accepting them.
These rules have been put in place because Insectnet forum was a mess before. All serious entomologists will easily respect these rules. Without these rules, we would have to close the forum.

OK - let me tread close to the line here. Admins - read closely and edit if needed.
This forum is owned by Wollastoni. Wollastoni also has rules from the software company that runs Proboards. My view (religion - faith - whatever you want to call it) is this: I submit to the authorities over me even when I choose to submit to the rules/bylaws here. I've had things edited I think and even had a thread about catching an illness which we are not to write about deleted. Was I ticked off? No. That's the way it is.
I've received much from this forum. My dad used to say: 'When trouble appears, grab ahold of it, kiss it on the lips, and move past it.' This means to me to deal with problems and move on. No insult intended and if anyone feels insulted that's for you to deal with. The 'rights' we have have on this forum are dispensed from its owner. If Wollastoni decides to make changes so that we all have to have our avatars be photos of us eating Easter candy in front of an aquarium while holding a taxidermy calico cat that died from C*$%D, that's his call. I can appeal, conform to the rules or even leave. Everyone seems to have something that makes them 'angry or have umbrage.' I encourage everyone, for the benefit of entymology, to exercise this right - 'Choose to not be offended and judge the heart or intention.' Someone can write something here and it might appear to be one thing when the writer intended something different.
This situation might be better be handled (yes, in my opinion) by sending a message to an admin asking why there was an edit/deletion/ etc. thinking that the admins have the best intentions at heart. This way, the science, hobby, business of entomology will grow because others will see this brotherhood (and sisterhood) of like-minded people and want to be a part of it.
Oh, and yeah, I will miss BioQuip. Hopefully, we encourage some young people to successfully go into business to fill the void that will be left.

Oh - and Jan, we've had strong words but I believe your post was spot on, concise, and well written. Stay safe during the conflict brewing in your region of the world and let us know if you need anything we/I can provide.

Speaking about Bioquip, I placed an order on Feb 15, got an order confirmation almost immediately, I checked the box for a shipping cost estimate, and have heard nothing in 2 weeks. I guess they must be inundated with orders, wonder how they can wrap everything up by March 11. Maybe they just stop taking orders March 11 but continue processing the backlog beyond that date.

You might have got in after the rush, I have my last order here at home already, ordering was a little peculiar though, I got an estimate for shipping, which was not actually finalized until the invoice showed up in my email, which was typically late, as was the charge to my card. Other than that, all was as it has always been. The parcel was halfway here before my invoice showed up-

I sent Bioquip an email to followup on my order, they got back to me and said it should be going out next week. No shipping estimate mentioned, I guess I just pay whatever it is. And they didn't mention any out of stocks, and I ordered a lot of different items. We will see.

Yesterday, I got the second of two Bioquip orders from last month. In those two orders, many items were not filled and won't be back ordered. Many books out of stock. I am very sorry to see Bioquip close. I have been doing business with them since the early 1980s. At this beginning of this discussion, I heard mention that Ianni had ceased operation. What happened there? I placed an order in mid-December and he said he getting right on it. Have not heard from him since and he hasn't replied to two subsequent emails.

Once March 11 has passed and they are closed, assuming they have filled all in-house orders, I wonder what they will do with all their unsold stock. I would think maybe a deep discount to purge the remaining stock, otherwise its just a write-off. Or a bulk sale to another ento supplier.

What is everyone in the US going to do without Bioquip? It was a one-stop shop for everything one could need in this hobby. Who else outside of Europe sells a comprehensive inventory of insect equipment? Anybody have an idea of what is going to happen with Bioquipbug inventory? While there are many large sellers of tropical insects, nobody else has much of the North American insects except them. I have a very large outstanding order placed there. Brent says is working very hard at orders but has a lot of them. I hope he can get to mine. I hope he has a place to land. He seems like a great guy and has been very helpful to me in the past.

I have three orders submitted to Bioquip at the moment. Decided I better buy some replacement MV bulbs, net handles, unit trays... I haven't heard from them, and in the past they were quick at shipping so I gave them a call. The lady was very nice and we chatted for a few minutes. She looked up my orders and said I should be receiving almost everything I ordered, but they are now out of pretty much everything. There catalog said "discontinued item" for most things.
I'll miss them a lot... Looking elsewhere for Cornell unit trays, drawers and cabinets... but some of the perishables such as lep pinning strips, ethyl acetate, vials, pins... I'm not sure where to look. Luckily I've gathered a dozen nets, jars, MV light, etc. from them...
Sad day for N.A. entomologists.

Okay, a bit off topic... So I was trying to buy the Matsuka book before they closed and I guess I just missed it because now they're telling me the book's no longer available. I'm trying to buy it directly from the publisher from Japan which is about the same price (everywhere else it's like twice the price) but apparently they are not shipping to Canada due to the pandemic. However, they do ship to the USA!?! It's ridiculous because I can literally drive to the US border in an hour!
Anyway, I'm thinking about using a parcel forwarding service like myus.com but they will only accept a package and not handle any import fees/duties should that arise. My question is, for importing a book worth about $300 USD, are there any extra fees or would it be delivered to a US address with no additional charges once it lands and customs determines it's not a restricted item? I tried to look this up online but got some conflicting information and I don't want to take a chance on a book that will cost about $500 CAD. Anyone here bought a book (or some other benign item) from outside the US recently who can speak to the import process? Thanks!
