Hi all. Well, the time has come to say goodbye. Out of respect to the admin and for the continued good health of this site, I’ll simply say that differences in philosophy have led me to bow out. Thanks go out to all the great posts/communications I’ve had with you members through my many years. May all your insect endeavors be fruitful and you all stay healthy. Within minutes of this post (if it’s not actually edited), I will not be able to reply as I’m dissolving my membership.
Bill

I was going through old posts and wondered whatever happened to so many extremely knowledgeable past members. I myself bowed out for several months, and am reconsidering the time I invest on this forum. The other one is about dead. What happened?
Why do so many quit? A couple other forums I’ve been on with the same guys and gals for 25 years, always welcoming new members. All the old guys each pitch in $100 to $500 a year, and the site owners have upgraded software and still make money.
This place should be a resounding hive of research, collaboration, and publication. What’s the challenge?
Chuck

Eh, I don't really know who you are but this strikes me as a drama queen-ish slap to us rather than legit difference of opinion. Bye.

Some of us us just like to play with bugs. I read all the posts, and actually like the way things have changed lately, clearly we have a random mix of experience levels and approach to the discipline.

Could someone tell me the departed Bill's username? I don't necessarily know everyone's name but generally recognize their usernames.

The person was one of the good ones. Bill G.
Bill, I did read what you had posted which got edited. It was talking about USFW. Now one might argue that it went a bit off topic and it was talking about an American only issue. I don't think it broke any forum rules.
I do hope that the moderator that edited any of it posts a public apology and we can have Bill back.
After the German forum implemented some moderators it went over the head of one of their moderators. He started editing the posts of people and mine included. This is not right in any way. You might delete parts and make a note [deleted by moderator] but never edit out or change a single character of text. I haven't been active in that place for 10 years now. The moderator was kicked out shortly after the incident.

I didn't edit the post myself, but it is important to respect government officials of any country doing their job. From what I understand a moderator deleted a 'descriptive' word which was disrespectful twice.
It is indeed a pity that Bill has taken this action, rather than making a complaint about the moderation.
Adam.

It's a great shame that Bill has left. Although he's been quieter recently, Bill was a member of this forum for a long time and was always one of the more valued contributors. However, it does seem a bit of an overreaction to one inflammatory word being removed from his post.

My post above should stand as my complaint about inappropriate moderation. Access to most of my photos is now private. Bill’s experience with corrupt government officials reflect my own. They deserve no respect, they deserve incarceration. Lacking the ability to effect that, some may use strong descriptives, which is warranted. Who we need to respect is each other, inclusive of authorship. The fact remains that this forum has lost a substantial number of key contributors. It has lost value. It’s up to the owner to run as he wishes. I’ll miss Bill, as I do many of the other departed. Chuck

I'll take the blame. I deleted the word "goon" twice from his post - in reference to people who work at USFW. I explained to him privately, that it is best to assume that the site is monitored at some level, and that it is best for all of us "not to poke the beast". It's one thing to explain your concerns, it's quite another to to inflame the situation further by denigrating other people.
That was too much for him I guess. I too am sorry that he is leaving - and told him so.

Bill will be missed. But insults are clearly forbidden on our forum so you did right John. And insulting USFW on a public forum is the best way to get the whole US collecting community or Insectnet into trouble. Bill, you will be more than welcomed if one day you want to come back. exoticimports : what happened to the other forum ? Danny died, Peter is terribly ill and I bought Insectnet. And we were (with Adam) responsible of most posts there. + the other forum was created because Insectnet was badly moderated (you remember Thanos and so on...). We all came back to Insectnet when Insectnet was bought. I would add that the moderating team is doing a GREAT job. You don't see all the spams and scams edited. And I haven't seen one edited post for no good reason. So I really would like to thank here the moderating team. To avoid any future issue, let me remind all members our rules : no insults, no politics, no religion. Not so hard to respect on an entomological forum.

I ended my contributions here a long time ago - some will remember why. I posted a couple of threads on something as indisputable as climate change and a simple BBC nature program where climate change was also mentioned and gosh things turned personal and ugly! For something as simple as that!?!? Some facts was certainly much disliked and disputed for whatever purpose it served.
Following, I deleted all my posts (but some of the replies remain here I believe) and dropped out on contributing anything. This was all during a period with just one moderator that could only do so much. Following these events, Olivier had a few more moderators join in and though I continue to read here regularly, I contributed pretty much nothing since then.
To the observant reader, there has since then been statements that would definitely be political statements (now against forum rules) - like calling the Canadian prime minister a dictator (he was democratically elected to the best of my knowledge!) and more recently the "wacko" state of California and something about fears of immigrants from there turning other states into new Californias. "Subtle" statements that doesn't belong on this forum as they are disrespectful to others that does not agree with someone's own ideas of what is "correct".
Some time ago, I brought to the attention of a couple of moderators some statements that could very well be deemed somewhat racist in nature, but they were allowed to stay up. It was regarding how some countries should not have their misappropriated national, cultural and religious objects returned because "we're better at caring for them than these countries are themselves". Statements are there, though often subtle in expression.
I know that a number of persons do not want to actively contribute here because they find it too tedious and even intimidating in fear of personal attacks. Not cool!
Thanks to the, in my world, fair moderators for their effort!
Jan

Nice example : - some people complain because too much moderation - some people complain because not enough moderation.
Could we just respect the rules and stop whining please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS : Jan, indeed some of these terms should have been edited. Sorry, we are not perfect...

I appreciated many of the related experiences and I am glad it helped me to be more diplomatic in my dealings with some. As we mature, I hope that we do not run off the younger crowd and come across as being arrogant. This hobby like others (geology, aquarium keeping etc.), will slowly pass into the nether regions if we are not more welcoming (ie belittling) and choose our words carefully. I've been here a long time and am active in supporting our advertisers, forum and even other members here with money and time. I started a thread about how I was ill and it turned into a mess with vaccine talk blah blah blah. It had to be deleted. Was I upset about it? Nah. I just learned more about the rules and how to post here. Rant over. I love you guys for the work you do here!

Because it has members who have considerable knowledge and years of experience, this forum is one of the few places where I can ask questions and expect to get helpful answers (or for that matter, get any responses at all). It's good to know that there are still others out there who share my fascination for insects, and I hope that at least some percentage of the younger generations (and generations yet to come) will keep the subject of entomology alive and well, both scientifically and as a hobby.
