Not a political question though politics may be a cause… I occasionally look at the Ornithoptera that a dealer in Russia sells. I don’t buy any of his products because I don’t wanna get in trouble bringing them into the country. In addition there have been posts here about his products having been altered (regular priamus turned into uvillianus). Where most Ornithoptera on eBay were from Russian Federation, there are none now listed that I see (Alex Bic excluded). Is this from an economic conflict stemming from the armed conflict? Please no replies that are political in nature or opinions about the conflict. That does not belong here.
Thanks for the speculation in advance.

I think it might be shipping, I've noticed no posts from the at risk regions on the Actias site, usually there will be something offered. As to the exact nature of what a shipping issue might be, who knows? Customs or just reliability?

I can see Ornithoptera from Russia for sale, so your premise isn't right.

I can see Ornithoptera from Russia for sale, so your premise isn't right. A query rather than a premise. Another member messaged me to say he cannot see 'them' (as prefaced by my original post) in the USA but can see them on the Canadian eBay. So with this additional information and recent search using multiple criteria the question remains (albeit with USA eBay). When looking at the seller with a VPN, I saw the Canadian listings and as of last night the seller is away til 2031! Can forgive that as that seller often has translation issues when posting. If anyone sees a USA eBay Ornithoptera from Russian Federation posted, please post or message me a link for data purposes. Thanks, Tyson

update:
When I did a search eliminating all words other than Ornithoptera I found a single Russian dealer on the USA eBay. This dealer does not ship to the USA. The others from the past that I have seen, were not visable. There are still sellers from other countris who do ship (against US import law). The one seller may allow the 3rd party eBay shipper but if someone won't ship to your country there is usually a reason.

On eBay you can choose to block countries if you are unable to service these countries. As far as I know PayPal and Western Union have ceased operations in Russia and they have been excluded from SWIFT. So there isn't really a way to send them any money.

Tyson I confirm that eBay (and Paypal) have "frozen" all Russian accounts. (due to the war in Ukraine). Several Russian sellers have contacted me for this issue : they have no more access to their ebay account and can't list any new item. And if you click on any Russian seller item, you will see a message "The seller is away until Dec 31, 2030" : www.ebay.com/itm/154890065522

Well that explains much. I am amazed by this unanticipated development. I suppose some eBay sellers could fill the vacuum and grow their customer base. I sell some on eBay but I'm supplying my local customers and some wholesale customers on the USA East coast. My middle daughter frames specimens but sells on Etsy.
If there are sellers wanting to list here, perhaps it will benefit InsectNet long term!

HAllo, yes it is so, some or almost all have vacation until 2030. They can't do anything now, even if they are apolitical or whatever. Besides, I had heard that cites are needed for the EU if you import here from Russia. Risk! Customs can then confiscate everything and you get a hefty fine. Did a friend, so imported, but the package was not controlled. I had once asked a dealer about this but said, with such a good price I should not be so queue The fine remains. I have always visited the store because he also had other things but the guy was too arrogant for me. The matter becomes serious only when there is no more vodka ...

What do you mean by "CITES is needed + they aren't protected" You mean your customs are asking CITES permits for non CITES species now ?

I don't think Miguel's delayed parcel has anything to do with CITES.
It seems customs across the EU are overloaded with the backlog due to new regulations on all mail coming from outside the EU. In early October my mother in the UK sent a thick envelope to my brother in Cyprus containing Christmas and birthday cards for him and his daughter and Christmas, Anniversary and birthday cards for my family (my brother sends them on to me to save my mother having to pay twice for registered mail).
Previously he would receive these in 2 weeks, but this time they didn't arrive until the beginning of February, well after my brother's birthday in November and Christmas. This has never happened before, and he was told the delay was due to new customs regulations. The envelope was clearly marked as greetings cards, and customs even originally wanted to charge 4 Euros import duty on them, but when my brother confirmed the contents were for family they cancelled the tax.
Adam.

I wanted to say that when you receive something from outside the EU(even a gift),you have to pay IVA,when they ask for what do you have received you have to say that they are insects with no commercial value and non protected species.

hey! this is a little random but i guess it falls under the “cause of this?” category but i’m relatively new to moth raising. i’ve been observing a luna moth pupa for 3 weeks, and for the first two weeks she wiggled everyday on her own with or without stimulus, when i sexed the pupa i was barely able to get a good look at the markings bc of how much she wiggled. but as of this week she hasn’t moved at all even when touched. her pupas coloration is getting darker and i’ve noticed some black dots and lines forming on the wing area of her pupa. i haven’t noticed a difference in weight though, my biggest concern is the fact she has not moved. luna moth pupae are supposed to be very active after pupation and it’s just concerning that she’s not loving anymore. will she be ok??
