I know two people who "saw" ivory bills the last time they were rediscovered about a decade ago. One is my counterpart at TNC Arkansas, and the other an avid birder who co-founded Wild Birds Unlimited. Both are highly credible. But I still have my doubts.

I hope what your friends saw was the real thing. My grandfather used to see them on a regular basis in the early 1900s. I don't think he saw any after the 1930s.

I had a neighbor swear he saw one last year here in our neighborhood in Missouri...right after he told me about how I should be drinking willow water to prevent cancer.

I can’t speak to the woodpecker but I highly recommend NOT depending on willow water to avert cancer.

Seems like I watched a documentary about the woodpecker's extinct or not status, and there were some blurry pictures, and the conclusion was that they're probably extinct and people were seeing some other bird.

I saw one in Indiana 2 years ago, it was eating a Colias ponteni. I hadn't time to take a picture of it because a smilodon frightened him !
