One of the joys of attending the annual Lep Soc meeting, is that you get to meet people like Floyd and June. They would drive their camper to the meeting, collecting along the route to and from the meeting - plus just about anywhere lese they could go. I remember having long conversations with June, as she sat at a picnic table, sorting the bugs they caught on the trip to the meeting.

Roughly 20 years ago I was visiting a state park in the Lower Rio Grande Valley area of TX. I don't remember which park it was, but I stopped at a butterfly garden and noticed a man and a woman with butterfly nets. I started talking to them and told them I was a collector also. I asked about the park's policy regarding collecting. They told me they had permits but that I needed one in order to collect. They were very nice people, were staying in a trailer in the park, and were visiting from Kansas. I don't remember their names, but I think it may have been the Prestons. I heard later on that a park ranger had confronted them, treated them very rudely and basically kicked them out of the park, despite the fact that they had collecting permits. It's a shame that such nice, friendly, law-abiding lepidopterists were treated that way, especially after driving all the way from Kansas. Don't bother to collect down there, even if you have a permit. The NABA police will be watching you, and they hate collectors.

I was about to say that one should join the LepSoc. There you can meet people like this. In Europe we have the Societas Europaea Lepidopterologica, but the majority of members of that one are museum employees.

Way back in the day, maybe the mid-late 1970's, the Prestons attended a meeting of the Southern Lepidopterists' Society held at my home in Kingsport, TN. They camped in their van in my driveway, and were a delight to get to know. I saw them a number of times afterwards at Lep Soc and SLS meetings, and maybe once at a KY Leps meeting. We even did a few specimen trades. They were wonderful people to know. I highly recommend joining some of the Lep groups -- meeting people like the Prestons is part of the joy of belonging!

Hey 58Chevy.
That is a curious tale about the couple that you encountered. However, I have to say that it really is BEYOND bold for anyone to honestly believe that they can collect butterflies at a "butterfly garden" -- no less; permits OR not !!
In my mind (at least) "butterfly gardens" are supposed to be sanctuaries of a kind and as such one can only expect to see people there who LOVE butterflies and see them as part of nature's tapestry of artwork.
I mean really that is much like someone bringing a smelter into a coin shop and having at it...
No wonder they were kicked out and treated rudely regardless of how unassuming and/or mild mannered they may have been.

I think I know the area 58chevy is talking about, we are talking about a 100 acre field (0.4sqkm) that turned into a butterfly protection site over the decades. There is another great area nearby that is 1000 acres. I had been there but only took pictures. Besides that 20 years is a long time so things were a bit different back then, one needs to see things in context.
