Please help me I.D. this bug!

hi folks,

i live in the suburbs north of manhattan

i live in condos built in the mid 80's and i've been here 3 yrs. pretty much the whole time i've found these bugs in my house. they're very utilitarian looking; i think they look like jeeps in that they're very sturdy looking and seem to have almost a back that is like armor!

i THINK they can fly. most of the time i find them they are half-dead and sticking to a wall or ceiling somewhere. other times they seem to have more life

here's 2 pix; if anyone can help me I.D. these, that would be great. mostly cuz i'm concerned for my house. looking straight down at them they have a very unique "armored looking" silhouette. i didn't quite capture that in these photos, but if nobody can I.D. them from these pix, i will try and take better ones

as i said, my primary concern is can they harm my house? i'm also curious why these guys are in here, or where they tend to "nest" if anyone knows. they've been a fairly consistent presence here
