Rick, I've never heard about Lactarius in US. This mushroom is one of the best, especially when preserved in brine. Anyway I wouldn't try it in New Mexico, because a species of mushroom edible in one area can be toxic in another one - not sure why, may be just because of misidentification. There is a funny book on mushrooms in different cultures by Wassons, with chapter IV "Mushrooms for murderers" dedicated entirely to "dying".
