I agree that our UK police should not be routinely armed with guns . I also don't believe in the death penalty as it doesn't appear to be a deterrent.
However, I do believe in corporal punishment and think we should bring back public floggings and public humiliation for more serious crimes. I would be happy to purchase eggs, tomatoes etc and take part in the administration of the humiliation process.

Johnny < not sure at all about public humilation... Justice should be fair, not humiliating. I prefer the good old "eye for an eye".
If you kill or rape someone : death sentence If you steal something : you refund 10 times the price (and if you are not wealthy enough, a part of your income is used to refund your victims If you deal drugs : long prison sentence and so on...
When you arrive in Indonesia, in all airport, its written clearly in big : "Welcome in Indonesia. Be aware : DRUG TRAFFIC = DEATH SENTENCE". It is simple, clear and rather efficient if you compare with other SE Asian countries like Thailand where you can see a lot of drugs in all touristic areas.

I think the death sentence should be brought back but only for the worst crimes like serial killers. My thoughts on Paedophiles would not bear posting on here but suffice to say emasculation with maybe a cheese wire or rusty knife may be involved! Alternatively lock them in a big room with the childs relatives, see how long they last! But I digress. Tougher prison sentences are the answer IMHO. Life should be that - life. The only way you get out is in a wooden box. I would also bring back forced labour, make them work hard on roads or quarries. Prison should be a punishment and deterrent not a holiday camp. When people are deliberately re-offending to get back inside because they have such a cushy life there you know something is wrong.

I was discussing prisons with an immigration officer and she told me they are overrun with Eastern european immigrants. She see's the same one's over and over again. They seem to get six weeks prison everytime they are sentenced. She asked why they don't return back to their country of origin. The answer is their wives and kids are doing very well on our benefits, and they go out on the thieve just to top up their benefits, and prison is just an occupational hazzard, and a minor inconvienience.

Here's a very sad story which has the whole city of Houston talking right now. It happened over this past weekend. This is the second officer involved shooting in this officer's 5 year employment with the police department. Not taking sides, but I wish people would think twice before they pull a trigger. Perhaps police would argue that they might end up dead unless they react quickly and that may be true. abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8826325Charlie Here's an earlier report with more details: abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=8820624

Maybe so Charlie, but a one armed guy in a wheelchair with a pen? Come one! Some people are just too trigger happy.

I was once working with another engineer in the house of a schizophrenic but didn't know it at the time. He seemed a nice guy but then all of a sudden for no real reason he turned into a psycho killer,it was not just someone shouting and screaming because they were upset, but something else which was really scary.Unless you have experienced it you will not realise how bad it is when they lose the plot. He was right to fear for his safety but shooting the guy was completely over the top. The problem here was the police officer was not trained or capable to deal with this person and should not have been there with out someone who was.

The report says the guy in the wheelchair cornered one of the officers inside the house. There was surely a light on? A ball point pen!!!!!! Come on. That's too far...

Personally, I have never owned a gun, not even a BB gun, primarily for safety reasons. It's just too easy for someone to get seriously hurt or killed due to bad judgement, poor training, or just an accident. Not only did the guy have just one arm, he also had just one leg. Seems like the caretaker of the house should have intervened, unless the police ordered him out of the room. Hopefully they will sort out this mess & justice will prevail.
Colin - I have experienced being around mentally ill patients back in the mid 70s. I worked for a janitorial company that had a cleaning contract for a state run facility in Illinois. This particular unit was for the "criminally insane", people that had been charged with crimes & found insane. Very scary place, especially at night! Meal time was in a cafeteria with the patients & staff. Constantly found myself looking over my shoulder.

When my son-in-law was 5 years old, his father was a Highway Patrolman in West Virginia and on a routine traffic stop followed a man home who claimed to have left it there with his license in it. The man came out of the house and pulled out a gun and shot the officer and his partner who was also seated in the patrol vehicle. Shot them both in the head.
Public safety is a dangerous job. I side with the police and rather they shoot first and sort it out later. Better to be fired than to be dead.
The USA is being overrun by illegal immigrants from all over the world but mostly Mexican. Now the leftist government is trying to entice them to sign up for food stamps in order to get them on the government dole and once addicted and dependent on government handouts they will become leftist voters once given amnesty.
It isn't about what is right or wrong for the country. It is about having control of the reins of government regardless of which country is being discussed.

Charlie By that same logic then, you must not own a car, kitchen knife, or can opener. I just came back from the big machine gun shoot at Knob Creek, Kentucky. Hundreds of machineguns, probably a million rounds fired off, machineguns for sale on tables, guys walking around with machineguns. And guess what- nobody was robbed, nobody injured. Not a one. The safest place in the world is a gunshow. Some of the most dangerous places are cities that ban guns. Go figure.

Yesterday in my area, a man was walking his dog. The dog knocked over a sign in the yard (political sign I guess). The home owner charged out of the house with a big knife. The dog walker owned a gun and a permit to carry it. He told the knife weilder to stop or he would fire. The knife toting home owner did not stop and was shot once. The dog and the dog owner were uninjured. The dog and owner might have been stabbed to death otherwise.
