They were all over the place, including hotel grounds, in Noumea in April/ May 2011. Unlike most Ulysses, they fly slowly and are not attentive.

Hi I have 3 males and 1 female of this nice species. I guess the pair on the left is the westwoodi form and both males on the right are the ulyssellus form. By the way, does anybody know why there are 2 forms? Maybe it is due to seasonal or regional factors? crino Attachments:

hi crino, i was talking to a friend about this recently on this subject of why there are 2 forms of montrouzieri. it's most likely due to sun, or heat exposure of the pupae would be the reason for the differences. if the pupae are in contact with light for long periods of time, when the butterflies eclose from their pupae they tend to be the bright electric blue of the ulyssellus form, while more shade and less exposure produces the result of westwoodi. likewise you also have specimens of this species from Lifou Island being much smaller than specimens from the mainland of New Caledonia. the color differences is similar to many graphium species to which drying their wings, sun exposure brings out more brighter colors, captive bred specimens present a much duller appearance.
