I have collecting butterflies for 55 years and always used water mixed with carbolic acid to retard mold, but couldn't leave the butterflies or moths in a relaxing chamber more than a few days. Sometimes you get busy and just can't get back to the bugs in time and they would mold.
Recently, a member here posted that he used straight mouth wash in his relaxing chamber and could leave an insect in the chamber for weeks without mold. I gave this a try, using regular Listerine mouthwash, and found it to be true. It was quite remarkable and wished I had learned this trick years ago. I use Tupperware containers and a single paper towel folded to fit the bottom of the container. I then add mouthwash and allow it to soak into the paper towel. When I tilt the container, I like to see a small puddle of mouthwash form in the lower corner of the container. I pour off any excess. I change the contents of the container once a month.
