Hi everybody,
is anybody out there having problems or long delays in the deliveries with packages sent to the US??? I've heard of many people who have made shipments over there and the addressee has not receive it yet after many weeks. Personally I sent 4 parcels 2-3 weeks ago and my friends there have not received them. If somebody has more information on this matter, please let me know. Thanks.

Curiously it seems the problems are not for the parcels that come from USA, but for the shipments that go over there. I received one today that has arrived in only 5 days and last week another one that arrived in only one week. We'll see what happends but for now the point is that I have one parcel sent 2 months ago dissappeared and 3 more that still don't arrive to my friends.

They are looking for bombs, did you include any bombs recently in your parcels ? Since this year it isn't allowed anymore to send bombs inside US.

I think certain labels are "red flags" for US customs officials. They know nothing about insects, but if they suspect that the parcels contain animals or animal parts, that is a reason to stop the parcel and send it on an alternate journey though the inspection process, hence the delay. For instance, if the package is labeled "BEETLES," they are sure to stop it. They will assume it is a box full of live beetles. Also, if the contents of an incoming package are valued over a certain amount, it might get selected for detour. Not sure how you labeled your packages, but I would suggest that you choose carefully how you word the content/value declarations. Don't lie, of course. I'm just saying that certain ways of saying things might be cause for suspicion, while saying the same thing in a different way would probably pass unnoticed.

What about receiving parcels from outside of the EU, Jaume?. Have you already met our good friends working in Speedtrans? They ruined 10% of the specimens that a Japanese friend sent to me and I took 2 months to get the parcel though my many efforts. At the end I hand to use some 3rd World tactics to get it, a whole oddisey! Take care when you have to receive something, in your case it would be better to have a postal adress in France.

I don't have any problem receiving specimens from other countries. Sometimes there are delays, but until now everything has arrived safely. Well, in fact I don't have problems in receiving parcels from USA either; the problem is when you send over there (at least lately) JAUME

I agree with Jaume. I never had any problems with receiving parcels from anywhere. I get them from Japan, Indonesia, China, Malaya, Germany and other EU Countries. Reason is probably since Canadian customs see that parcels containing, "Dead, dried insects for scientific study" are no threat too national security! Common sense goes a long way. The US even now are proposing a ban on importing rare ancient numismatic coins that were minted in Greece, Rome....where will this insanity end! Governments are supposed to work for the taxpayers, not control them, remember thats what the Communist regimes were good at. John

Dear friends,
I was not referring to problems to receive parcel in other countries, this is a Spanish problem, in fact I´m planning to receive parcels only in June and October, just in case Speedtrans (the company who has been given the rights to do the custom tramits in the first atep of privatization of Spanish postal service) wants to touch my b...s again with abusive fees, bad communication and I, therefore, have to travel to Madrid to solve the papers personally. Just wanted to warn Jaume in case he didn´t know about that.
Regards,
Alejandro A.

I am professional internet seller (not with insects). I am shipping over 10 packets weekly to USA so I have good statistic. Approximately in end of November 2010 the usual netto shipping time (about 2 weeks) started to be longer and packets shipped last week in November were delivered just around 10th January. That time shortened a bit, but still packets sent in second week of january just started to be delivered. I believe this situation is because USPS "is overworked" due to Christmas hectic, bad weather etc... Ihope it will normalise as quick as possible.

Some things worth noting here. Private carrier packages are more likely to be searched, especially since that mail bomb thing. So stay away from UPS, FedEx, etc.. I would use EMS or just simple air mail if at all possible.
My guess (and that is all this is) is that parcels from Europe and the Middle East are looked at very carefully, where as parcels from Latin America don’t get the same attention. This all has to do with the odds of terrorist attacks.
The unforeseen consequence of all this has been the virtual elimination of the “mail order Cuban cigar” business from Europe to the US. In Chicago alone, over 100,000 cigars a month are being intercepted now that they look at every package from Europe. Not that I personally think that there is anything special about Cuban blends (Honduras and Nicaragua are capable of exceptional cigars) – it is indeed a shame that US Customs pays employees to burn cigars. Hell, I could burn one for free every evening on the veranda – saving tax payers a good $10 every year!

I saw that parcels were coming into the USA slowly but the problem seems to have resolved for me.
If trade were opened with Cuba, the USA would have a whole new market to trade with and this would help both economies. I know why leaders won't open up and it's sad. So, I roll my own cigars.

Despite the embargo with Cuba being ridiculous, it has managed to save that island from being turned into a tourist zoo. There was a spectacular documentary on PBS not too long ago "Cuba, the accidental eden" (google it and watch it online for free). Sadly, if Cuba is opened to US tourism and dollars, then it might prove to be fatal to the relatively intact ecosystem. I'd love to visit... but I'm happy just looking at pictures as long as it's preserved.
