It won't be long before humans from different continents and islands, with differing juveniles, habitat, distribution so on and so on become sub species of homosapien (not sure of spelling), especially if people can get there names in literature. It's also the reason some species are Protected, P.apollo is a case in point, it's widespread, relatively common but because of the tiniest mark been segregated to so many sub.species that some are rare and restricted that the whole lot has been protected. Most of this is done solely for a little bit more money, i'm sure.

Im with you Rich. This whole thing just keeps getting more and more out of hand, and for what? Even common Saturniidae like Actias luna can have regional differences, or preferred hosts that can also alter their appearance slightly in color, form or size as larvae and adults. Im also sure if DNA and genetics were tested in these populations, slight differences would be found. Wasn't Samia watsoni recently moved to a whole new Genus of its own just because it didn't quite fit the mold of the rest? Mind you ive yet to see any proof other than the post-medial line is more "wavy" like Archeoattacus? "new" sub-species and even species have been named based on these traits so why not start giving the different luna populations sub-species status? Oh wait, Im sure its on the way very soon... Until more cut and dry rules are laid out for the entire scientific world, this argument and confusion will continue. So until this happens, there will be no right or wrong only opinions. Greg

Agree, "splitters" should be jailed.

splitters didn't wait the barcode to split. Before barcode it was genitalia, venation, etc.. barcode is just the last step. Bad use of it will give same result as bad use made in the past with genitalia, etc... anyway linking name and taxonomic level is purely theoric, with a use more or less clever and "logic"
