Hello, I am absolutely seeking a hard-copy of "Catalogue of the family-group, genus-group and species-group names of the Riodinidae & Lycaenidae (Lepidoptera) of the world".
This book is an invaluable source of knowledge but big stocks never made it to the shops and it is virtually impossible to find a hard-copy of it. There is a scan of it on BHL, but with 100dpi the scan is good for nothing...
Thanks for anybody that could sell me off his old copy or point me to a shop that has got it. Sorry that I didn't use the classifieds for books, but I doubt that anybody reads it.

Claude, you should use the classifieds for "lepidoptera". You will have more chance to find someone who can help you.

be very careful with BHL
I got "The dynastinae of the world" to them and I receive a stupid copy, very poor quality with some pages not complete.
A real scam !

BHL is online and free - so how can it be a scam? Now there are lots of 3rd rate printers who take open source books and sell them as bound issues. The printing is horrible, pages are missing/jumbled, plates are a joke - these basically are scams (a lot of these are just printed wikipedia articles!) |

Hello Mike, it is the same version on every website that got scanned in Illinois Library. Unfortunately they used a 100dpi scan which is useless, so many names can barely be read as "i" turns into "l" very often.

That is because these books are in copyright, but Bridges' widow decided that she would allow low resolution copies to be put online for general use. Perhaps you could e-mail the Illinois Library and ask them to put you in contact with whoever can sell an original.

Hi Adam, I would say this is only partially true (unless she told you this, then I cannot deny your word  ). BHL and archive.org in themself only produce low resolution scans altogether. I actually was wrong with my statement of 100dpi, I rechecked the files now and the books from these websites usually range between 55 and 74 dpi., the Bridges catalogue being in between with 64dpi. I would need a scan between 300 and maybe 400dpi! It is sad to see how the joint effort of scanning the worlds biology literature shoots itself in the knee by producing low resolution scans. It is hard to get a decent text recognition out of this and text mining becomes an ugly business. I once read that the reasons are file storage capacities, but I think they missed the point that data storage prices drop at a fast pace. I know about the copyright, it is explicitly stated in the book and on the websites. Also I have little hope that they have a copy of it left for sale.  |

I will check and see if I have a copy. If I do, I can let it go, as the Lamas et al effort has everything covered on my half of the planet.

This would be more than amazing Shuey! I have already send you my excitement over these news in a PM, so look on top of the website. It would be so great to still be able to acquire a copy of this book. They have been printed when I was 6 years old and it is sad that I came in some sense "too late" for them.

@manfred, thank you very much for looking after the book, I couldn't really find it and didn't know where to look for it. I have ordered this book now from that website. There is something a bit odd, they say it has 500 pages. The original book has 1200 pages, but the part I am most interested in has 500 pages. So even if it is just that part I will be happy to have it as it was these 500 pages I was looking for.
