Here is the original figure of the ab.calverleyi(1864).This is an extreme form. But I'm shure I had seen all the transitional forms in "Journal of the Lepidopterist Society"; or "News of the Lepidopterists Society". I will made a search and give you PDFs.

Hi all, After a lot of searching on the internet I finally relocated the site that shows the beautiful "radianthus" ab./fm of P. troilus on Pg. 2 at: lepidoptera.jcmdi.com/u/abby2/abby.html A site full of aberrant butterflies gathered from everywhere... Thanks to everyone on generous comments... being at just the right place, at the right time & a matter of pure luck in snagging it in a single swing... "love it when a plan comes together" ... haha
Gauthier... Thx. for posting that image of ab. "calverlyi". I'm familiar with the Lep. Soc's site & will search as well...
Wollastoni... I found this site: lepidoptera.jcmdi.com/u/abby2/abby.html soon after I collected my specimen in June... I, too was surprised at all the "borrowed" images... many from insectnet forums & classifieds, ebay listings, etc. etc. Certainly images should have had permission from owners before posting.... & available for free downloads! Whenever I post my own photos to a site like insectnet (any site on the internet really) I fully expect them to be "borrowed" by others. I don't mind if for personal use by other collectors, but not for commercial interests... I would be quite upset, for instance, if I saw these photos (redone by 2 others for free) being used on a dealer's site. It might end up on that site... itself... no problems with that, but please ask.

On page 2 of the 'aberrations' site he has a specimen labelled as Pachlioptera [sic] liris aberrant [ha ha ha], it is of course a normal specimen of Pachliopta liris ssp. aberrans [doh]. I agree, he shows a distinct lack of respect for the original owners of the photos. Adam.

Hi again, I was looking through the plates in W. J. Holland's classic work "The Butterfly Book" & on plate XLI (41) I happened upon another similar image to that shown by gauthier. This time it is a female P. polyxenes asterius var. "calverleyi". This is the well known & commonest Black Swallowtail sp. in N. Am.. John K.

John K. (boghaunter1) The specimen of radianthus ab/fm of P. troilus on page 2 of the website you posted seems to be misidentified. The specimen is actually a transition form of P. polyxenes asterius ab. calverleyi. You can tell this by the single black eye spots on the hindwing anal angle that P. troilus does not have. Still very nice and I wish I had one. Norm (myko61)

The specimen in Holland's Butterfly Book, Plate XLI is in the collection of the Carnigie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. I have actually seen it. There are several other swallowtail aberation in the collection. The Holland Collection and the William Henry Edwards collection of type specimens is also at the Carnegie Museum.
It is a fabulous collection.

Hi Norm (Myko61),
Ever since I first saw this image of the aberrant P. Troilus I couldn't figure out exactly what was up (wrong?) with it.... yes you appear to be correct.... it is a P. asterius or Black Swallowtail & not P. troilus. Would have been nice to see the ventral surface...
Hi leptraps, I would love (who among use won't?... Haha) to be let loose for a few days in any major museum insect collection... just to pull out drawers & see some of the world's rarest & in this case beautiful & historic specimens... too bad mere amateurs have more & more restricted access to major collections... especially when the majority (nucleus)of those collections were built up by amateurs... perhaps, one day major collections will be digitized for all to gain access via the internet.

Greetings, Leptraps - I absolutely agree with your praise of the Carnegie Museum - it is a truly astounding resource. Of course, I'm biased - I work there It is somewhat surprising however, that we are so often overlooked by researchers - I guess Pittsburgh is just one of the cities in the shadows of NY, LA, DC, etc. Lepidopterists such as yourself have a much better appreciation of the collection due to the legacy of William Holland, but in other groups, despite the collections being just as strong, we sometimes get totally overlooked. Having the priviledge to work in such a fine institution is rare - and I cherish every day - sitting at one's desk within a 13 million specimen, internationally pertinent collection is the only kind of "cubicle" I ever want!! Cheers! Bandrow
