Does anyone have any details about what taxes may be payable when importing specimens into the EU, or more specifically the UK? I'm soon to import a fairly high value parcel from Peru and the seller wants to declare as much value as possible on the customs declaration. I don't want to find I'm liable for 20% VAT on the whole value or other expensive taxes.

in Germany I had to pay 19 % Import VAT for parcels from outside the EU. The cutsoms wanted to see the original invoice and the proof of payment (paypal f.e.).

In Slovakia same as in Germany, only VAT is 20%. VAT is aplicable to whole value of parcel / including shipping and permit costs /. Also pure Paypal payment copy is not sufficient, they usually want to see proof that Paypal account is attached to my credit card or bank account. In addition insects are not duty free, but rate depends to which cathegory customs put packed dry insects as this is not very clear and they have more choices.

Thanks for your replies. It sounds like I'll have to be careful, otherwise it could get very expensive.

When I bought ornithoptera from ifta I bought into the uk 2 large orders the first were for personal collection and the second primarily for resale at Kettering a few years ago, you may remember I had a dozen drawers of them. Both we're opened at customs, the cites paperwork stamped and the parcels cleared and sent to me, I was only charged import duty on the box that was bought for resale, this was 17.5% then I think! it's now 20%. I've had other large orders checked including a box of charaxes from Uganda, this is because they hadn't put customs declaration on the box and they wanted a list of the contents, when they were happy there was not restricted specimens they sent them to me without import charges. I think it's more for the Peruvian customs, you must have read on here about hildebrando Rojas villegas and his arrest, he was saying his parcels value was less than it actually was so he didn't have to pay so much duty, They declare full value nowadays cos it's prison if they ain't careful.
