Hello, if you go there, be careful! jta.de/dudelsack/pfeil.jpgI wonder whether it is still dangerous to visit solomon islands.... joachim We cross posted (posted at same time.) Solomon Islands towns are fairly safe. And fun. Collecting near the towns is easy. Going far down the coast, to remote islands, or inland is not recommended. It's hot, it's dangerous ground, and some of the people don't want foreigners or even other Solomon Islanders on their land. What is safe? A lot of this depends on how savvy a person is. I've talked my way out of a number of very dangerous situations. And I almost died from joint salmonella/ malaria. I had a great time in Napo, Ecuador, but one woman got lost for a night and was so inexperienced that she didn't realize the noise she could hear was the camp generator. An engineer I know got lost and spent the night in the jungle of Rarotonga- which has, what, a 32km circumference? LOL. I'm sure I could get into trouble in Thailand (well, actually I did) while I'm sure Adam could get out of that same situation with ease...or at least have been smart enough to NOT get into that position to begin with. I don't think a country is safe or not safe; it's localized. Where I live, it's very safe. In Manhattan, not safe. And, more than anything, it depends on the person. Chuck

Looks like it took a while, but you got one. And to think, right now there are dozens or hundreds of them flying around up there. Chuck I got some already few years ago when my friend Nicolas Grimaldi went to Guadalcanal. But I have received this month some very nice pairs of it as you can see.

Depends of the islands. Guadalcanal is not so dangerous now, Choiseul can be another story. Some places in New Guinea are much more dangerous with regular foreigner killings and kidnappings. Gangs, indepentist militia, corrupted Indonesian army, aggressive tribes : choose your best friend. Funny you should say that...Mt. Hagen is about the worst. But if I went with my friend from Mt. Hagen I'm sure I'd have no problem. And if I went to Bougainville with my friend from Aroa, no problem. I would caution anyone except the very most experienced to NOT GO to the interior or weather coast of Guadalcanal. Not even now to Gold Ridge...we had a dicey time there a couple years ago and that was with a wontok from that area. I would NOT go poking around Malaita, or Choisul. And that's the people- in New Georgia you take a nice swim, and bang you're gone fast as a tuna in Darwin. It is a challenging environment, and 99% of people are not up for it. Chuck

Well Mount Hagen seems ok now, the Kumul Lodge is full of tourists, including entomologists and birders. (before covid of course)
