They shouldn't have killed it off of course. Once the existing specimens degrade over time, they will be gone forever

Once the existing specimens degrade over time, they will be gone forever Lol, it's likely that many of the specimens will be bright and golden after we're all dead and burried...killing them off was the best move at the time for maximum and instant profit. Again. As stated above, breeders were afraid people would try and steal them...

Again. As stated above, breeders were afraid people would try and steal them... lol ... Ornithoptera is the most commercial thing ever happened in Entomology. I am curious to see the profits or money generated by this business. It is then normal that all thing touching Ornithoptera are more concerned by profit than entomology. If most Ornithoptera are protected by CITES 2/3, don't forget it is a purely commercial protection.

That Original golden euphorion strain just died out - probably through in-breeding. This always seems to happen , many fantastic butterfly and moth aberrations have been produced by selective breeding. They can be kept going for a number of years but then the strain will always weaken and the aberration, perhaps gone for ever. There is really No mystery here.
