Hi everyone! My name is Andrew. I'm working as a graduate student at the University of Western Ontario studying population genetics in Parnassius smintheus in southwestern Alberta. I came across this site primarily through searching the web for information on rearing species of the Parnassius genus. I was really excited to see that a number of members on this site has had success not only rearing but also breeding, which to my knowledge has not yet been accomplished with much success in my study species. I'm hoping to learn more and maybe make a few Lep friends along the way! - Andrew Hi Andrew I am in Calgary once a year for a week visiting my family there and always collecting some butterflies in Kananaskis area. Never had enough luck to find more examples of P.smintheus but have few pairs. Adam and I susspect that area has two subspecies overlapping: magnus from south and smintheus from north. What are your thoughts? Do you live in Calgary? Paul

Where in the Pacific Northwest are you located? I am in Reno, Nevada, but have travelled in Eastern Oregon a lot. I'm further up in Vancouver, British Columbia. I've been to Reno a few times for vacation - very enjoyable place to visit. Got some nice areas to collect here, depending on what you are looking for. Nice to head up to Canada and Alaska to do some collecting sometime.

That international border and accompanying restrictions must be a bit of a hassle to deal with though....

One can't have fun with a hobby, and go collect common bugs without being hassled by someone with no clue, or some NABA type.

Hey everyone! Ever since I was 5, I loved collecting bugs. As I got older and older, I picked up new hobbies that my parents forced upon me but they never seemed to fill the gap that I was missing when I was very young. I still enjoy all my other extracurriculars but, if I’m being honest, collecting, breeding, and studying insects really makes me who I am. I recently got into keeping mantids and silkmoths and will continue to do so (hopefully even during college). High school right now is going great, but It’s really hard to find people to talk to about bugs since my high school is very competitive and people with an interest in entomology just almost “don’t exist” there. That is mainly the reason why I would like to contribute to this site and it’s community!

I have the same issue finding insect lovers at school (everyone else at my school only cares about staying inside and being glued on their phones).

Welcome here guys ! I remember discovering InsectNet forum when I was in highschool too. It was great to see that there were so many entomologists all over the world. Entomology is a solitary passion until you join some local associations and international forums. Then you realize there are several entomologists living near you.

It is great to see that there are a number of younger enthusiasts lining up to become amateur or maybe even professional entomologists. The modern world has so many frivolous pastimes it's good to see that there will be young entomologists to take our place when we older folk eventually leave you all behind.
Adam.
PS. When I was in "high school" we didn't have the internet, never mind Insectnet forum; we had to connect with other enthusiasts and also sellers by writing letters (would you believe it!), which may take a week or more to arrive depending where the recipient was based, and often some weeks before a reply was received.

I joined the Lepidopterist s Society when I was 16 years old in 1961. When I received the list members, I was busy writing letters to learn if others wanted to trade. Most of those who responded were older than me. I still maintain contact with two of them. But now I email them.
My trading is really limited. Mostly with life long friends. I also collect Beer and Soda Pop Bottles with the contents enclosed. Two of my Lepidopterist friend collect bottles of beer and Soda Pop as well.
I have never drank alcohol, never liked the taste and it made me act more goofy than I already does. As for the Soda Pop, I purchase two bottles, one for the collection and one to taste it.
And yes, I have bottles of both Red Neck and Dick Head Beer. And Billy Beer also (Named after the brother of former President, Jimmy Carter), who but the way is now the oldest living President. And I can also claim I shook Jimmy Carters hand in 1996. .
