I see there is a recently listed add in the classifieds that links to an auction on Proxibid.com. I looked throught the cases and there are some REALLY nice specimens, Nice series of Catocala sappho, Speyeria idalia, Speyeria nokomis, Eacles imperialis, Citheronia regalis, Papilio cresphontes and many nice Catocala. Also, Bhutanitis lidderdali, Psychomorpha epimenis, Papilio antimachus, Ornithoptera, Morpho, Papilio appalachiensis, a VERY large male P. glaucus, an abberant P. glaucus, Papilio zalmoxis and a Thysania zenobia caught in 1904!
Do you think this website is safe? Are any of you bidding? Also, does anyone know who's collection this is?

No answers to any of your questions but one major disadvantage is that the whole collection seems to be in riker mounts so it would be very difficult to get the specimens out without breaking legs, antennae etc. Also, I can't see data on any of the specimens; if the specimens don't have data they are completely worthless.

Not that data is unimportant but I appreciate specimens for their beauty so I see lots of value still. As for the rikers, I see your point but it can be done, especially if one does not consider legs a necessity, like myself.

I'm not seeing any collecting data.
Who's collection is this?

I can see why people collect just for beauties sake alone but it's not for me, data will always be just as important as the specimen itself, nice collection but as Bob says carnage could ensue trying to remove them.

Nice wall decors, I don’t see any scientific value in those arrangements and no data. I would buy few for cheap dollar for my walls but it is not really my taste .

I seem to remember that some people put the data on the back of the riker mounts, so perhaps there is data.

Ah, in that case they are worthless other than as pretty objects for the wall - sad really.
Adam.

Surprising for someone with such a collection.

If anyone is serious about bidding they can always ask the auction house about data instead of speculating. Some of the boxes vaguely mention locality and decade so I imagine there is some data.

I think I know who's collection this is. But I am not positive.
These are not Rlker mounts. They are Black & White Insect Display Drawers/ Cases. Both American Biological and Carolina Biological both sold these as "Display Case" many years ago.
I saw several collections back in the late 1960's that were in these type of cases.
When you are gone, what will become of your collection?
I made arrangements for my collection once I am gone. I originally wanted it to go to the Smithsonian. Now it will go to the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity. I have made the arrangements and I know that it will be used.

this is the collection of Dr. raymond thomas, from what i found out he traveled quite extensivey to put together his collection, practised in arizona and passed away dec,2016,the sad part of the last parts offered for auction is that someone has removed the data from these specimens and put a single label with partial specimen names, the specimens i obtained in jan and feb had very specific data on all specimens recorded on the back with individual labels for each specimen these not only included location, date, collectorbut also highways roads, canyons, rivers and switchbacks etc.truly a great collector and another loss for the insect community RIP best wishes walter
