Hello all,
Just received my copy of S. Marshall's recent beetle book published/released this Sept., 2018. Wow!... a huge book, 9" x 11.25" x 2.25", 784 pgs, weighing in at 7.4 lbs! I purchased this massive, encyclopedic volume on Amazon.ca for a mere $60.67 CAD (~$47.00 USD) with free shipping. Highly recommended as an excellent introduction to the order Coleoptera... on the front cover "Masterly - the beetle book every entomologist will wish they had when starting out" by Maxwell Barclay, Senior Curator of Coleoptera, Natural History Museum, London. There are 4 other additional highly complementary positive reviews on the back cover. This book is, IMHO, one of the best values & one of the most interesting & informative books I have ever purchased. For the first time I can see, in one volume, clear, colour, living photos (4,500!) of all worldwide beetle families + many rare/obscure spp... with the scientific name & worldwide location of each... not boring/monotonous black & white line drawings or blurry images. This book's list price was only $97.00 CAD (~$75.00 USD) as published. This book is fascinating to spend many long, cold winter nights just viewing the photos/captions alone... first skiff of snow was on the ground this morning here in SK, Canada!
I have to, at this time, also recommend S. Marshall's 2 other similar, excellent recent books. They too, are both huge, (published by FireflyBooks), & terrific values (around a $100.00 CAD[~$77.00 USD])each, or less, on sale at Amazon.)... one is "Flies - The Natural History & Diversity of Diptera", 616 pgs., 5.4 lbs. & the other is "Insects - Their Natural History & Diversity, with a photographic guide to the Insects of E. N. Am., 2nd edition", 735 pgs., 6.9 lbs. As with the "Beetle" book, both have thousands of colour photos with full scientific names. Altogether, almost 20 lbs of books with over 2,100 pgs., for under $300.00 CAD (~$230.00 USD). Please note that the photos in all 3 books are smaller, but all are of living specimens & are clear & in colour. There are a few, widely scattered photos of pinned specimens of very rare/obscure spp.. All 3 books have the latest scientific names & arrangements of the insect families & are accompanied by informative, interesting & concise text.
