Does anyone know any differences between ornithoptera meridionalis meridionalis and ornithoptera meridionalis tarunggarensis?

Anatomically......can't help you. There is very little taxonomic difference between the two as i understand it. O. m. m. Is from SE Papua New Guinae (east side) while O. m. t. Is from western PNG which is really Irian Jaya (west side). When last I read on this, there were none of these found in the vast middle region of the area. I am no expert w these, but thought I'd share my take on them.

I changed the subject line to attract the attention of birdwing experts who may be able to help.

I seem to recall reading somewhere (Haugum & Low??) that the males are pretty much identical, and the differences in adults lie in the females. But I can't seem to find the passage again at the moment. jh

According to G. Deslisle J.P. Sclavo in Outstanding Birdwing Butterflies (2015) there are no real differences, small populations of meridionalis being found right across New Guinea. I believe the problem here was that tarunggarensis was described by just two females collected by the Pratts in 1921 without a proper series being examined, the male not being known.
