Is WMA bad? In most places WMA means hunting and shooting are allowed.

We have Wildlife Management Areas here in Kentucky. You can collect in any of them, they just want to know when you are there. I collect in four WMA's here in Kentucky. I usually call in advance of the visit, however, I usually leave a voice mail. The staffs of WMA here in Kentucky are rather small, two to five employees depending on the size of the WMA.
They know who I am and each receives a list of what I find at years end.
I always ask first. Only once have I been denied access and it was in the Lower Rio Grand Valley. And, I was told in writing, that my kind were not wanted on their property. I wrote a letter to the State of Texas State Parks and WMA. Received an apology. Nothing more was ever said. All I wanted to know what my "Kind" is??

Last summer I organized a Southern Lepidopterists' Society Field Meeting in a WMA in eastern Tennessee. In the course of setting this up I discovered that Tennessee does indeed require a research sampling permit for collecting in a TN WMA. It was very simple to obtain, and the relevant officers were helpful in getting the permit.
Several years ago I was summarily ejected from a Georgia WMA for collecting without a permit. I went to the regional DNR office to see about getting a permit, and was told that none was necessary - collecting invertebrates in GA WMA's does not require any permit! The officer who threw me out was in the wrong.
Collecting just gets harder and harder as time goes by.

By the way, Leroy - I'm not surprised that the TX Parks and WMA people couldn't say what your "kind" is. You're a totally one-off unique individual! Cheers, jh
