One major cause of the decline in the quality and quantity of many insect foodplants is the effect of nitrogen oxide pollutants, these are produced mainly by cars. Even in Scandinavia, where the traffic density will be very low in comparison to much of the rest of Europe, increased concentrations of these gases will particularly affect plants such as Sedum, acting as a fertilizer and weakening the plants, making them more susceptible to rot. This will, in turn, have an affect on associated insects etc.
In England, some moth species, such as the Garden Tiger, which used to be common, have now disappeared almost completely. It has been found that the larvae cannot successfully overwinter now because its just too warm and they go mouldy and die. Global warming and pollution are likely to be involved in much of the decline in many insects in Europe.

Talking about the populations of Spain that I know I think their biggest problems are pesticides, farming and ski.

I know a population of Apollo aparently extinted due to a Works of erradication of Thaumetopoea pytiocampa, otherwise there are places that Apollo is a still a very common butterfly.

Three years ago I went to see Apollo in Sierra Nevada, between Granada and Almeria and I seen so many of them, maybe Apollo was the most common butterfly in that place,I know places in Teruel where is also very common and in the Pirineos if you go to the right place you Will see Apollo for sure.

Since joining this group I have learned more about the world around me and also some things about Lepidoptera and Lepidopterist.
I live in the State of Kentucky, in the United States of American. Canada is our neighbor to the north. The USA & Canada makeup the vast majority of the North American Continent. With the exception of some parks and preserves, I can swing a net, set out traps and collect insects to my hearts delight.
Can those of you who live in Europe say the same thing. Can you travel about and collecting insects in any of your neighboring countries. I know the European Union changed some things. Can you collect anywhere within the European Union. I assume parks and preserves are off limits?
At one time I was sought after to bring some drawers of specimens and present the world of Lepidoptera and Insects to schools. Not anymore. I am now a killer. I kill living creatures. When I ask the question, then why is it okay to give students abortions. That is killing, is it not. I am always ask to leave.

Similar situation is happening in Canadadian Rockies. I am trying to study population of P.smintheus in Kananaskis Range while I'm there ( although not enough time to really engage ) and the population is in decline due to overgrowing habitat. The tree line is climbing higher due to global warming ( which I believe in 95% is the natural cycle of Earth ) and the mountain meadows are shrinking at very fast rate. I found once also aerial photos from decades before and current once and the difference is huge. Parnassius individuals are not able to fly longer distances to find new meadows at different ranges.

In Spain you need permits even if you are out of a Park, but in my case I wanted to prospect inside a Park and I have no problems with nobody.
In 2001 I made a trip to Italy and I asked if permits were needed, the person from the Italian Society told me that the permits wasn´t needed but It would better come with a paper to support the collecting.
I brought two boxes of butterflies and moths to my job to support one activity of one workmate and nobody made any negative comments.
Otherwise our comunists want to ban the Hunt,I suppose that they´ll try to ban our collecting too

These people meanwhile continue their destructive modern life with pollution and emissions.... Sad! Jan And they proudly called them selves "environmentalists" and nature lovers while using their cars to get to remote places to take few photos in the competition of posting best shots on social medias and blaming everyone around but them selves on nature decline. Jan:
I have to say that the populations of Apollo that I know are in very good condition, somtimes I think that the autorities have more interest in the conservation of Apollo because is a big butterfly(I have the same sensation with Actias isabellae),for example if you go to Teruel you Will see easily Apollo in each one of their mountains.

Talking about the populations of Spain that I know I think their biggest problems are pesticides, farming and ski. I highly doubt that ski is a threat for apollo as it is a common species in many French Alpes ski resorts. On the contrary, sky slopes limit overgrowing and thus protect Parnassius, Colias and some Lycaenidae biotopes. For me there are 2 main explanations of P. apollo decline : - overgrowing vegetation due to less sheeps in the mountains than in the past, - global warming in small mountains : apollo has to go higher in altitude but in low mountain chains, there is nowhere to go higher.

Maybe I have said Ski cause I hate that Sport but I think is very correct the global warming in small mountains,I remember in the beginning of the 90´s that Apollo was flying in a isolated mountain around 1500 mts high, around ten years later they flied around 1600 mts high and I haven´t seen them in years there.
The overgrowing vegetatiton was a problema with Phengaris arion in Ordesa National Park,They banned the cows inside the park and the butterfly desapeared, few years later the cows returned , the biotopes for the butterfly returned and the butterfly too

Ban the hunt? It takes guns to hunt. Guns are why they will ban the hunt. No guns in the UK Hunt, but they still banned it some years ago. Adam.

The loud voice of the eco warrior has no reason, it has no knowledge, it can't be educated, it simply spouts out uninformed dross in an hysterical, hand wringing, self righteous manner to all who are made to listen. Can't be bargained with or have any other point of view but unfortunately due to political correctness it will be listened to and acted upon by law makers too weak to tell them that for once they are wrong and can't have their own way.
