I have very recently preserved an Uca panacea, and it is the first crab that I have preserved. I took the flesh out from all parts of its body and glued the exoskeleton back together, but I am worried that it will change color because of its dryness. Is color change something to worry about on crab specimens, or will the color just stay on? Thanks in advance.

Short answer is yes they lose color. Some color can be restored by costing the dried shell with clear polyurethane.

Here are a few crab and other Crustacea images from the exhibit, Exquisite Creatures, currently at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. I don't know how they were preserved and it looks some may be deep sea creatures where color is often pale at best.

Alandmor, if you have any more close-up shots please post them. Your photos are spectacular!

The artist that preserved the crabs is Christopher Marley, his work can be seen on Instagram instagram.com/pheromone_christophermarley or in one of his books. I recently bought Biophilia from him and enjoyed it. I wish we could all travel and I could see the exhibit in Oregon. Hopefully later this year or next year.

On his personal website (just google the name) you can also buy some of his artworks. I really enjoy his works with sea urchins. I guess the dried specimen are painted with acrylic color.

I suppose most people see what we do as artistic, while we don’t think of that aspect.

I suppose most people see what we do as artistic, while we don’t think of that aspect. From an earlier post: Follow the link below to a Google photo album of the Exquisite Creatures exhibit by Christopher Marley currently at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland. He started with insect mosaic pieces and has since branched out into vertebrates, crustaceans, shells etc. The specimens, their preservation and presentation are truly remarkable. See for yourself. photos.app.goo.gl/con2YitS17i77REM9
