North American population sometime exhibit blue colour inside black spots on hindwings also although they are not so vivd as in Australian V.kershawi. I wonder if old world V.cardui specimens have blue spots, I only have one specimen from Poland and the spots are all solid black. Here is another specimen collected in 2017 during invasion. This one has some blue inside black spots.

The ones in the UK don't exhibit blue spots

This one has some blue inside black spots. I always had the feeling that American Vanessa cardui were different than European ones. As I don't collect such common species, I never knew why. It could be indeed a blue spot difference. When you see them you do feel something different. I remember saying this to Danny last year in Indiana.
