Sorry! I, uh, ummm... I had fallen and couldn't get up!
Lunas might look cool, pierids or maybe lycaenids could look good. Unfortunately, there really aren't a lot of taxa that aren't in some part black or at least dark. A big box of gold and silver Chrysina could be striking - but who has that many of those?
Cheers! Bandrow

Figured id share the cabinet I made this past summer. Normally I don't have time to build a whole cabinet and drawers myself but as a college student I also don't have the money to buy one so building it is. I used two power tools for building this, a cheap construction site used table saw and a sander. It took lots of measuring but as you can see, the cabinet turned out alright. The picture was from this summer and this cabinet is now half full of specimens. Drawers are made from scrap deck cedar, clearance glass, hardboard from some shipping containers and paint/polyurethane. Cabinet itself is made from a broken Ping-Pong table I found on the side of the road and scrap wood from a construction site. 13 drawers and the cabinet came out around 58.99$ most of the cost was from the glass, polyurethane, and paint/stain. Of course, the real cost was in the time I spent building this as it took me a month from the time I obtained the wood to the time of me putting specimens in the cases. I also prefer dark black stained wood rather than the varnished raw wood.

My sincere compliments indeed !
Very innovative... Wonderful work which shows a "labor of love" for the passion which you hold dear. Amazing !
Looks like you also do some good prep work on your specimens. Could you show us another case or two ?
Thank you for kindly sharing your project with us.

Here is a preview of my next cabinet. These I opted for some fancier hardwoods. I had to wait a year since I got the pieces as freshly cut scrap from a wood mill. Glass I got from some picture frames. Only had to buy the hardboard for the bottom. total cost: ~2$ per case (picture frames were about 1$ each and the hardboard comes in a big 4*8 sheet). The most expensive thing I'm using is my time.... which is the greatest limiting factor for me at the moment. image3 (3) by e d, on Flickr Wooden boards which were given to me as "scrap". In this pile there are poplar, walnut, pine, red cedar, and maple (some are not in the picture). image4 (3) by e d, on Flickr What they currently look like. Pending a few more cuts and then I get to move on to the cabinet itself. image5 (1) by e d, on Flickr I cant wait to have these finished and already have a few other boards set aside for my drawers after I'm finished with these.

There is a nice "how to build a drawer" tutorial at this site. www.resourcefulentomology.com/insect-drawers. This is not a beginner's project. Takes some skill for sure, but if you have it - I'm guessing that you could bring the finished drawer in for about $10US each. I'm a pretty experienced wood worker, and I have the tools, but I am reluctant to try this myself. It's a lot of work! John

Speaking of Home Depot: I went in to buy four Ryobi cordless tools. Only one wasn’t locked up. First moron went to get the key. Twenty minutes later I see him helping a different customer. Second moron goes to get the key. Never saw him again. We left.
I’d go to Lowe’s but they are record stupid. And never have anything. I’ve found the local Ace to be intelligent but limited supply. I wish we had the quality and brains in retail stores that they do in Germany. It’s a joy to walk around German stores and see a level of quality unavailable in USA.

That's amusing, sounds like the premise for a bad movie, besides the "assistance" what I find bothersome with those giant stores, is I get tired looking around, and have to use a basket or cart as a walker. I'm not ready to use those motorized carts. I wish I could afford to go to Germany to buy tools.. I did like shopping when I was in Italy, you could buy beer anywhere...the Vatican for instance, just take off your hat.
