O'h my......
It looks like some threads are just doomed to a derailment and train wreck.

I was liking the reading, about Ornithoptera- maybe the butterfly is worth 30 grand, but that's a set price, not an auction, I have learned there is a difference between what people think something is worth and what buyers are willing to pay.

THANK YOU kevinkk, the train has been righted !
Now honestly, with this butterfly these days it is expensive for a pair but, not crazy pricing like that one by that seller "from outer space".
Pairs can run several hundred dollars as this is not Priamus we are talking about. Of coarse, most of the true value lies with the male which is concurrently why large single males in A1 shape will run at least 400 bucks or better -- if you can find one.
Males of these which are smaller and/or wing "marred" naturally slide in value and price quickly....
Its really one of the most notable species of birdwings amongst the crop and I just thought a thread about it and maybe someone's specimen pictures would only add to its coveted status.

I look at Ornithoptera on ebay now and then, they're all great looking animals. What is affordable? I've got more money than I've ever had, which isn't really saying a lot... but I could toss out a thousand for some dead stock or mounted specimens if I wanted to, but never bite. There's always something other shiny object or an unexpected expense (you can always expect the unexpected, but it's form is the real unexpected) I suppose it depends how much dedication you have to your interests. For now, I'm satisfied with what I've got going, although I was looking at a mercury vapor light yesterday.. I wish I had all the insects I'd bought as a younger person, prices have gone up since the 80's, the demise of those insects is a porch light topic though, like the sad disposition of all the specimens I collected in the Dominican Republic in the early 80's. Maybe I'll give ebay a look later.

I seem to remember that not that long ago (maybe 10-15 years) when Mike Hudson was still in business, it was possible to buy 10 pairs of chimaera at about $60 per pair. Yes, it was always more expensive than priamus or goliath but was one of the three species he sold in bulk.

I remember buying chimaera from Michael Hudson for 50 usd per pair! Pity he vanished.

Top one came from Richard Timms (former forum member) and bottom one from I think Mike Howlett.
