A week ago, butterflies were on the wing and azaleas were blooming in the Houston area. Now everything is covered in ice. So much for an early start to the collecting season.

Seems like we were all wrong. I am finally back online after not having internet and heating for several hours... (with an unusual -14°C, or 7°F in Dallas).

I must say I got a bit of a giggle when I read all the complaining about Texans being without power for 5 hours! Last big blow in November up here in New England I was without power for 2+ days .!Thank god for my generator .

We had people in Florida steal generators at night after hurricanes......Clever thieves would leave a lawnmower running where the generator was so that sleeping people were not awakened by the lack of a generators sound.
I remember overhearing someone in the 80's say (jokingly) to bring back CFC's to damage ozone and heat the planet up. Today reminded me of that as I went hunting with a windchill around -25F.
Tonight should peak in Kansas. Lots of plumbers making money on burst pipes.

I don't sweat until 100°F and I wear my pajamas at night when it's 70°C. Can't have it all. Anyway, 2 days in such a cold without electricity must be horrible and I am glad you came out well. I have a subzero certified sleeping bag when the energy problems persist into the night. Wish I had a generator.

Some amusing comments, leaving a lawnmower running is clever. My generator is indoors, I have a long cable lock too. Temperature is all about being climate adjusted, when I first moved from Northern Calif., where I wore shorts a lot of the time, moved 300 miles north to where I am now, I thought that this place was cold and miserable. Although I don't think anyone is going to adjust to below zero very quickly.
When we had our power outage because of wildfires, my camping gear came in pretty handy, along with the freeze dried food. I did spend more time reading though.
Never trust that groundhog- besides, I think that only matters east of the Mississipi (ok, I cant spell that one, and I'm not looking it up)

That gopher never knows what he's talking about. And the animated version called 'Gus the Groundhog' that the Pennsylvania Lottery uses as a mascot is one creepy little rodent... Cheers! Bandrow

Phil, that's the guy! Here in Oregon we use a hedgehog, and they're not even native. We should use a beaver, it's the state animal. Resist the temptation for beaver jokes guys.

Okay - I'll resist - but I have a bunch - the county to the west of Pittsburgh is 'Beaver County' - and to the north 'Butler County'. Locals here insist it should be spelled "Buttler"... Ciao! Yes, we a a coastal small town with the name. I'm going to try and rescue my credibility by changing the subject. So, I just finished my first attempts at relaxing dead stock in 20 years.
Luckily, I bought 2 pairs of priamus, the first one I tried was the female, I bent the shoulders a bit, I know there is a term for that part of the wing, but it escapes me, the male turned out better, but it was close, I had some mold develop. I think that happened for 2 reasons, he had a piece of paper towel on the abdomen that I should have probably removed, and for disinfectant, using diluted Oxine.
Oxine- I've got that because in diluted solution, it's useful for preventing infections and disease in caterpillars, another member here gave me copious information about his use of it, and conclusions, worthy of a paper probably, he'd found that he was able to reinvigorate stock with issues normally attributed to inbreeding by using the Oxine in branch water and a mist. Anyone that is interested, can ask me the details.
So, what I've come up with for relaxing, during this continuing winter.. is basically water and non diluted Oxine, I soak a sponge in hot water, put it in a closed container with the Oxine and butterfly, I have the hypodermic needles, but maybe I bought a size too big, because I couldn't get the needle into a dry body, so I just use the water and some Oxine at first for a couple days, then I can inject the body with water, more Oxine, or another fluid I have for relaxing beetles, which also works on lepidoptera. I set the container on a heat pad for reptiles, and that keeps everything warm and humid. Now that my unthawed package has finally shown up from Bioquip, I'm ready to try the remaining priamus.

It is spring on the Oregon coast, my bulbs are coming up, we missed the snowpocalypse that caused chaos in the normally snow free valley. I see moths fly nearly all year, small, but they're flying around, I consider spring to be official when the cabbage whites fly by, perhaps soon.

It's clear and sunny, and currently 72 F in North Texas. Several days ago, people here were struggling to keep from freezing to death. Now, they're wearing T-shirts and shorts! I have all my windows open.
