Illegal to keep? Are the dead bird police surveilling your home ? I wouldn't joke about that, what's goofy today.. I always feel bad for the birds that smack into our windows, sometimes, it's a clean kill, other times, just a thud and feathers. A few times I've had a tweety bird peck at the window, like some Hitchockian avian, I still feed them, though, what you don't want to do is leave anything like a fast food bag lying in sight of the crows, one time at lunch, I looked away and one had my cheeseburger. Hummingbird in the house! I had an uncle that teased my little sister at the time, they always go for the eyes. Any crows around my house are subject to lead poisoning via my pellet gun . They peck at my roof shingles . Very smart those crows ; but I’am a good shot.

When I was a kid my grandparents and most of my neighborhood were immigrants from Italy . I was an alter boy at the Italian church . The old Italian priest and many of the old timers used to love to eat birds . Their favorites? Starlings and robins. So make yourself a meal ; although , you’d sure need a lot of hummingbirds .

I feed the birds during the Winter. Especially during this extremely cold weather. I purchase 40 pound bags of Sunflower Seeds and Plain Bird Seeds. I go through a bag a week. During this extremely cold period, I will almost double that.

Last spring while driving to town there was a black and white flash in front of me and a thud. I stopped and looked around and found a dead red headed woodpecker. Knowing these have become much more uncommon recently I saved it and put it in the freezer. I felt terrible. I contacted our local DNR and explained the situation to them and asked if they wanted it or knew of a museum that might. They told me to dispose of it immediately (suggested just tossing it in the woods) and reminded me that nearly all birds are protected (except some invasives and ones with hunting seasons)under the over 100 year old migratory bird act and you did not want to get caught with a dead bird.
