Why not just rent a car and drive ? I will be renting a car regardless I understand . Suitable collecting habit will be everywhere . Go on Google Earth ; get the gps coordinates and go there . I find species Iam looking for all the time by doing nothing more.

I would guess many databases exist for different states and regions, I use the PNW Pacific Northwest one sometimes, species capture dates and locations. It's just a matter of typing in the right thing and seeing what comes up.

What exactly do you want to know? Which part of AK were you thinking about visiting? Cheers, jh Just looking for advice on collecting in areas around Anchorage. I'm open to a phone call if preferred. Thanks, Jason Sorry, all my AK collecting was done between Fairbanks and Deadhorse; I can't help with the Anchorage area. jh

One of the biggest issues with Alaska is that roads are actually kind of rare. Most travel is done by float plane, and to a lesser extent, boat. Distances are vast as well. A lot of the areas in south Alaska are very swampy as well. The last time I was fishing there I ran into a moose in the dense forest a couple of times. Fortunately they were moose and not brown bears. I thought that moth collecting might be interesting, but you only get about 0.5 hours of darkness per night when the sun goes behind Denali so I don’t really know how effective your lights could be.

Good suggestions on databases, but just to add... If you're not familiar with the SCAN Database, I checked and there are about 75,000 records for Alaska. Great source for when and where the Leps might be. scan-bugs.org/portal/collections/Eric

Hi, Jason! If happens that you succeed in collecting in Alaska this summer, you can get from me in exchange a good number of species from the other side of the Pacific North region - Chukotka (Far N-Е Russia). I collected there myself and still keep specimens in stocks. They must be similar to Alaskan but a bit different as well. Anyone interested can offer your stuff from N-W Canada and Alaska in exchange for my. Andrew

I have made two trips to Churchill, Manitoba. Just getting too Churchill was a journey to remember. I came home with about 35 species of Butterflies. I only collected 4 species of moths. Most off the walls with lights in town. The second trip I shipped two light traps to Churchill. I purchased three "well" used batteries. I brought the EA in two Vodka Bottles. I came home with 18 specimens of moths. I think I had 12 species. Three times something knocked my traps over. And another night someone stole one my batteries.
Do not go alone. Take another collector with you. And do not go with great expectations.
I only did a single trip to Alaska. Met Ken Phillips and had a good trip. Just a handful of moths.
I have thought about one more trip to the great North, possibly next year. At the age of 76, I do not have many more opportunities.
