In late August of last year a good friend and like minded collector found this beauty of a Pigeon Horntail (Tremex sp.) resting on the bark of his pear tree in Wisconsin. He gifted it too me shortly thereafter knowing that I have a certain "fondness" for Hymenoptera. This species is sizable for a temperate species of hymenopteran. Large females such as my example measure 50 mm. in length (head to ovipositor tip). What makes a find such as this exciting is the honest "infrequency" of ever encountering an adult in the wild ! This is just one of those "kind of things" that one may only run across in the field every few years...
