Omaha, Nebraska. 3 nights ago at around 1:30 am, I was awakened by what I initially thought was a ball bearing going out in a fan in my bedroom. When I turned my fan off and the noise continued I spent the next 5 minutes trying to figure where the heck the noise was coming from. It seems to be coming from the ceiling or wall in my bathroom. Covering the only duct in the ceiling does not quiet the noise at all. Here is a quick snippet of the sound: Sleepkiller insectThe noise is absolutely deafening. I'm not sure if the mic on my phone does it justice, but the noise continues for minutes on end with no pause. If I snap my finger or tap the wall it will stop for a second and continue for hours. What is this and how do I get rid of it? I have slept for 2 hours each night for the last 3 nights and I'm starting to lose it. Link to audio clip

Knowing where you are helps.
Sounds like a cricket. Spray bug killer in the duct.

Definitely an orthopteran insect, possibly a katydid - bugguide.net/node/view/164I've heard a similar sound coming from the trees at night around my house, during spring / summer.

Knowing where you are helps. Sounds like a cricket. Spray bug killer in the duct. It doesn't seem to be coming from the duct, as covering the opening completely doesn't dull the sound at all. It's infuriating.

It may be coming from outside the window rather than anywhere inside the house, and the bathroom may be magnifying the noise. I agree the source is likely to be a katydid (nowadays known as family Tettigoniidae), some species can be very noisy indeed.

Contrary to exoticimports advice of spraying bug killer in your air duct; I would advise against it !
I was an exterminator for nearly two years and I dealt with several bug killing chemicals. All were designed as residuals that would last at least 2 weeks. The over-the-counter products sold (though weaker in concentrate) are still residuals and will last some period of time inside your home.
You would not want a residual chemical sprayed in an air duct to be recirculating itself in that room or throughout the house !

The wall of the bathroom is an interior wall that actually shares with an internal wall with my laundry room. The noise is considerably less noticeable in the laundry room.

True, and the sounds that some of the giant tropical species can produce are nearly deafening -

The one in the video is much less noisy than the loud ones which seasonally occur in my garden.
Adam.
