A friend in Sao Paulo, Brazil told me about 2 weeks ago she had seen a strange insect that looked like a butterfly mixed with a cricket that she had never seen before. Anyway last week here in the UK (I live in the South East of England) I saw a similar-sounding insect on my window. I took a photo and showed her and she said hers looked like that too but the one she saw had green wings. Please would you identify it for us Thank you!

I am not familiar with UK moths, particularly from the underside with wings closed, but it may be a 'Jersey tiger moth', Euplagia quadripunctaria, judging by the visible bands on the forewings and the body structure.
I guess your friend in Sao Paolo saw something very different, certainly not the same species, and maybe not a moth at all.
Adam.

Excellent thank you both for your help. I didn't know moths were that colorful. Is it one that comes out in the daytime?
