The absolute best looking dragonfly species which I
have personally encountered -- only once; is pictured
below in this internet image.
This is our fabulous Comet Darner Dragonfly (Anax longipes)
of eastern North America.
Darner dragonflies or "hawkers" as some call them of
the family (Aeshnidae) are our largest dragonfly species
here and are amongst the largest dragonflies on the planet.
This particular species has a wingspan around 5 inches across
and is a "stunning" creature to see patrolling over a mill pond.
Several years ago now, I encountered one lone specimen
of this species patrolling a pond which I happened upon in
the far southern counties of my state (ILL.)
I really tried desperately to capture it for 45 minutes in the
heat and sun of mid-summer; without luck. However, that
dragonfly left an indelible mark on me that day and I have
neither forgotten the experience or the encounter.
Since that time I have re-visited the site on several occasions
(to no avail); in encountering it again. I presume the southern
reaches of my state are perhaps the most northerly limits of the
species range here.
One heck' of a species to see in life and a mighty tough customer
to ever capture...
