Greetings all, I tried baiting for adult Catocala using a coating on a tree consisting of white sugar, brown sugar, an overripe banana, honey, and a little bit of yeast to he,p with fermenting. It was a warm, still night with little moon around, yet I got zero results. I did have a blacklight/MV light maybe 10 or so feet away from the trap. Was there anything wrong that I did?

I have not had much success with bait traps, but great success painting bait on some trees in the ravine behind my house (just east of Toronto). From mid July to mid September, I bait most nights and usually see 10 to 20 catocala each night. My recipe is stale beer, brown sugar, ripe banana and molasses. Been using it with success for years. I would not put your bait trap so close to your MV light.

Oslari,
Where are you located? End of August is long past the flight time of most all Catocalas where I live in the southern Appalachians. I generally get more at bait traps than at uv light here, although this has been a very poor year for them generally. jh

In Ontario I see catocala at bait into September, and generally stop sugaring when they are well worn and diminishing in numbers. But I expect there would still be a few stragglers on a warm night in early October. Have no knowledge of catocala season in California.
