Hi, I found this large bee looking thing on a buddleia in Worcestershire, UK. It has a proboscis and was drinking nectar. About one inch in length. Does anyone know what this strange insect is? Could it be a bee-hornet hybrid, or the winged insects mentioned in revelations? I was pretty scared

It is a peaceful fly : Volucella zonaria.
They mimics hornet in order not to get eaten by birds. Common in W. Europe.
