Maybe katydid eggs? I remember finding these these quite often as a kid but I never tried to rear any.

For information purposes: the 'grasshopper' family Katydidae is nowadays correctly known as Tettigoniidae, but most people still call them 'Katydids'.

Colloquially, should we refer to them all as grasshoppers then? Is there a term for the Katydidae subgroup?

I hesitated between calling them grasshoppers and crickets, as in reality they are not really either of those.

Exactly. Even if they are grasshoppers taxonomically, for the average person, they still want a label to distinguish between Katydidae and non-Katydidae.
