Here is a small selection of varied butterflies from parts of central and southern Europe as well as northern Africa. I recently culled them from a small European collection. Nothing flashy but, if your (like me) and your first love of insects was butterflies; then its all good no matter the species. I don't know any of the names but, here is where they come from: Column 1. (top to bottom) Morocco Tunisia Switzerland Column 2. Algeria Sweden Switzerland Column 3. Switzerland Greece Corsica Column 4. Greece Spain I think its pretty cool having anything from Switzerland !

1st column a pair of Argynnis Pandora, below that Danaus chrysippus. Top 3rd row Marsh Fritillary Euphydryas aurinia, 3rd row bottom 2 specimens are the Corsican heath Coenonympha corinna. I could hazard a guess with the others but would be just that , a guess.

Pieridae is Leptidea species. In mid 80’s they were all consider as Leptidea sinapis ( at least in Poland) but now I think there are 6 species look alike and can be distinguished mainly by examination of genitalia.

Thank you very much Yorky and Paul K for those species determinations !
I really appreciate when others can help me with these unnamed things I acquire from time to time.

I've just taken a pair of pandora off the boards and it's no exaggeration to say that the female is enormous. This species is usually slightly bigger than Argynnis paphia but this female is almost twice the size, must have been on steroids.
