With mercury vapor lamps getting harder and harder to find, i was wondering if anyone has experimented with alternatives, specifically ceramic metal halide (CMH). These bulbs are relatively new to the market, and apparently they produce quite a lot of UV, much more than regular metal halides. Because of this, I could imagine them being quite good for insect collecting, and possibly a replacement for MV.

I bet they would work well, but also might give you a sun burn (some brands are made for lizards too that have warnings about eye/skin exposure). But even metal halide/sodium vapor/etc all have different wavelengths and bring in different insects that might not come to mercury vapor. I've seen less at metal halides, but it'll be noticeably different than what's around the corner at someone Hg sheet, and then entirely different still from what shows up at at ~15w UV light.

I'd expect it to work very well the more remotely you are. I've used simple MH for photosynthesis in keeping Acropora (a stony coral) in my tanks. The UV output is very high and can burn retinas if not careful.
