Hi, We had hundreds of these bugs on the railing of our deck and wanted to know if anyone here can help ID them. Thanks! Chris

The pic is not clear, but I suspect they are a type of aphid.
You should tell us where in the World you are located, that may help.
Adam.

Could they possibly be some species of immature Hemiptera ?
The shape of the body is reminiscent of some of the Hemiptera families such as Reduviidae, Pentatomidae, etc.
I could see such immatures hiding within the cracks of the wood deck waiting for a warm spring day to make them active.

I think I can see cornicles protruding from the rear of their abdomens, although they are out of focus. That's why I think they could be aphids. However, that could be my imagination, and they could be other types of Hemiptera. n3ptune1, Perhaps an in-focus photo from a little further away would be better, even if they are small. Otherwise you could use the zoom function. Adam.

Hi, We had hundreds of these bugs on the railing of our deck and wanted to know if anyone here can help ID them. Thanks! Chris It is a species of springtail similar to the one in this link. They feed on fungus and other organic material and at times can be very numerous. Not a worry. The species pictured has similar markings and is also from Massachusetts so it could be the same as yours: bugguide.net/node/view/614094
