First, the blub is glazed, specifically to absorb UV light. You will be disappointed with the results. And you will need a ballast to make it work - that's above my pay grade.

John In SE Asia as well in French Guiana everyone use frosted MV and moths are coming in tones. I did use these too and I wasn’t disappointed at all. I never used them here in Canada but I assuming they should work as well.

Leroy - aka lep traps, told me once that everything sold in the US had to filter out excess UV light - and that he purchased direct from Asian manufacturers to get the bulbs needed for collecting. My personal experience with MV bulbs I purchased off the shelf here in the US has been disappointing - although I never went as high as 400 watts. Give me those old UV "sun lamp" tanning bulbs from the 70's any day!

Interesting, perhaps those manufactured for US market have different standard than these for Asia and Europe ( French Guiana uses 220V and I suppose use all electrical supplies as per EU ). Maybe they are frosted but don’t filter UV. For Canada I use 110V clear once with built in ballast and have no experience with frosted bulbs here.

I have heard mixed reports but don’t have personal experience with MV. Leroy said only clear bulbs emit a good amount of UV. However, I know someone who bought frosted bulbs from the US and use them just fine.

Clear MV bulbs work great. I have some 400W clear bulbs that I bought before they were banned in the U.S. You might have to look for them in another country. Mine were manufactured by Sylvania, possibly in Canada or France (French writing on packaging). You might also try pestwest.com out of Sarasota, FL.

Don't full spectrum lights for indoor gardening work? Seems like my 1000 watt halide was pretty bright.

Yes, gardening and for reptile care/basking, tons of UV. Wear protective glasses and watch for sunburns! Basically any bright light with good UV output will draw in lots of moths, and different spectra will give you different results. Don't abandon your old 15w tube, keep it on the sheet and turn off the bright bulb once in a while to draw in the rest. And/or run a trap with the 15w.
