Anyone else hear or read the story about the guy in Iran sentenced to be blinded by his victim?
Apparently he'd attacked a woman in the street after she'd spurned his advances and thrown battery acid into her face causing her to be severely disfigured and blinded in both eyes.
Anyway...the court in Iran gave the victim the opportunity of receiving "blood money" from the perpetrator but when this was refused sentenced the guy to be blinded by having acid put into his eyes. Apparently this was going to be done by a doctor after the man had been given a general anaesthetic.
The punishment was commuted (delayed?) at the last minute due to the international outcry but my question is...is this the most brutal, inhumane punishment or quite literally a case of an eye for an eye?

Many cultures hold fast to an eye for an eye. This seems to be the animal kingdom way too. Often, the higher apes hold a grudge and participate in revenge behavior. For a society to use physical punishment, it is, in my opinion, only ok when it 1) deters the abnormal behavior of the criminal 2) deters the abnormal behavior of others in society in the future and 3) is of a nature where the majority of the community agrees the punishment is appropriate. This punishment fits the crime but the criminal would not be able to contribute to the community in the future. Soooo........ Not ok with this member of the world community.

Here in the UK the pendulum appears to have swung in the opposite direction... I've just read an article in a non-tabloid newspaper about a serial burgular, who had committed a series of 60+ offences, who was freed by a Judge because he had OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and had a real "thing" about cleanliness! The Judge said sending him to jail would be tantamount to "torture"!!! I doubt his victims would be so sympathetic...neither am I. Perhaps he could be locked in a cell with some cleaning materials for the next 25 years...give him a chance to get it nice and clean. Simon

It is very hard to cope with problematic individuals, every society has its own approach and I can't say that one is much better than the other on either end of the spectrum. What makes a punishment appropriate and where do you draw the line?
My suggestion- all criminals, any sort, get shoved into a glassine envelope and dropped into a jar of acetone for a week. Then we can push a pin through them and put them on an international wall of shame (with complete and accurate collecting data, of course). They could be organized by offense- the Redhandidae, Guiltybyassociata, Politicianiini, Pettythievorea, and so on.
