The Periodical Cicada Brood XIX has been out in full force here in Durham, NC. Last week I attempted my first time lapse. I learned a lot from doing it and hope to do more in the future. I put it together in Quicktime Pro with some audio of the cicadas during the day. I originally shot 2700 pictures over a 7.5 hour time period, one every 10 seconds. I ended up editing it down to around 1500 because there were some times when the cicada just didn't move or change. The video is here: I also have a blog post about it and some still pictures of the cicadas here: solidrockpix.blogspot.com/I hope you will take a look and let me know what you think! Also, feel free to pass the link along to anyone whom you think might like it. Thanks!

Superb, well done! That noise must drive you up the wall though, how many days does it last? Dave

It took about a week for the noise to really get started since the males outer shells have to harden first. So its been noisy for about a week or so so far. They should be hanging around for about a month more from what I understand. They only make the noise during the day, not at night so its pretty tolerable. Thanks for checking it out! --mark--

Very nicely done. I remember an emergence of these in central Illinois back about 1970 or so. Have never seen (or heard) anything like it since. Thanks for sharing it!

I eperienced the periodicles... NOT FUN! the only fun thing was going in the yard with a baseball bat, shaking a tree and pop about 30 of 'em with one swing! does any one else do that? I guess I'm weird
