Hi, I have caught a few beetles in West Java in April 2011 and I would need some identification for them, can somebody identify me this Dorcus to subspecies level if possible ?

Species level of this one would be nice, but family or genus would already be of big help ! I furthermore have 1 specimen of this species for sale, just drop me an email or PM, it comes with full GPS data.

Sideview of same specimen than above. They remind me of our native Melolontha melolontha, so would Melolonthinae be right subfamily ?

Thx Lucanidae25 ! Could you, if possible, explain me in easy words what is the main characteristic that makes the species Dorcus eurycephalus and not another Dorcus sp. ? I have no clue how to determine Lucanidae but of course I would like to learn how to.
Is this species here the same species ? It has shorter mandibula but was caught at the very same place.

and here various small beetles ranging from 8mm to 2cm where I would be happy if people could tell me what families I got. Of course species level or genus would be cool but families already help.

It should be better to post one species:post...
The big one in your 2nd and 3rd post is a Melolonthidae. You have also posted Rutelidae, but there is no possibility to ID under blister...

Every picture except the Melolonthidae has a number, species 1 to 5. I don't want to spam the forum with a million topics for just a few beetles.
Thank you very much for confirming the Melolonthidae. I know that ID under blister is difficult and the picture are of poor quality but I packed the beetles now and there was no possibility taking a clear picture before I packed them, I apologize for that.
Thanks, Claude

To my mind, This is not spamming with posting one foto/species.
This is the way we do in all other European forums (Italy, Czech Republic, France, ...). By this way, we can have some nice ID without any problems.
Insects under blister can't be determined (except for very easy species). And for a lot of beetles, aedeagus is really helpfull (Anomala species, for exemple).
Fotos N° 1, 2 and 4 are Rutelidae Foto N° 3 are Hoplia sp. Foto N° 5 are Dynastidae

Thank you for the determinations. I know it is very difficult to determine under the plastic but I just wanted to get a hint for the family, this was the most important for me.
Thanks again, Claude
