Hi all,
I've got an Atrophaneura priapus from Mount Wayang in Western Java.
Would this be of the nominate race?
I'll post a 'photo when the current uploading "issue" is resolved.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Simon

According the Tsukuda's book (page 252), Atrophaneura priapus ssp. are dispatched in this way : - A. p. priapus : West Java - A. p. carolinae : Sumatera East - A. p. dilutus : East Java Regarding the geographical distribution, your sample is Atrophaneura priapus priapus. Looking to plate 48 (where ssp. carolinae is not featured), your sample is actually priapus : yellowish marginal band on HW larger than in dilutus, black patches inside this marginal band greater and more strongly marked than in dilutus. All the best !

The book : Etsuzo TSUKADA & Yasusuke NISHIYAMA, Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands, vol. 1 Papilionidae, Plapac, Tokyo, 1992 (in english). This book is available in Roppon Ashi ; price : 26, 250 Y = 317 USD see their page : kawamo.co.jp/roppon-ashi/sub117e.htm As far I know, Roppon Ashi is cheaper than many other internet entomological books sellers ! I use to order almost all my books in Roppon Ashi (it's a free advertising !). All the best ! Attachments:

I must add that the Tsukuda's book is a little bit old (1992). Since it had been published, knowledge about butterflies (range, taxonomy, and so on) has evolved.
It is nevertheless an indispensable book for those who are passionate about leps in this part of the world!

I am surprised that no supplements have come out with taxa described since 1982. Lots of new ssp., sp. have been discovered in Indonesia since 1982.

This book series is a must have for people interested in that region, I hope I can afford the whole series one day too, ... I had been saving up money for a year to get the second part of it about Danainae and Pieridae and it was worth every single cent of what I paid.
@ John, I think when you make such a large series, and then see that after you have finished your work hundreds of new sp. and forms get described where 95% of them are pure nonsense I think you would either have lost the interest in publishing an Appendum trying to take up with the Japanese madness... maybe also the editor is not well in health either, does anyone know if he's still fine ?
