I found this guy in my backyard, I got the best picture I could but this insect is literally the back end of a yellow jacket with the neck arms and head of a mantis. 4 legs like a mantis as well. I'm thoroughly amazed by this creature, Any ideas? Or just mutation? Attachments:

This looks like a species of Mantispidae. Not a specialist in the group so can't help further than this I'm afarid, hopefully will give you a heads up in trying to ID further. Dave

Yes, a mantispid. Where are you from revonok? I have seven species from my yard in S E Queensland...

Mantispidae; Climaciella brunnea. It is a striking mimic of Polistes wasps. Jeff Prill

Thank you all for the fast reply. I'm from Illinois so I was surprised to find this. My sister had found something called a Brown Mantidfly, not sure if they're the same but it's certainly one of the two. Glad to know it's not some mutant species, though the idea of finding one was exciting.

It's the same thing. Mantidfly is simply the common name for this kind of insect.
