I dont do much light trapping and am in need of some info.
I live in PA USA and have been having slim results at my lights this season. So I guess my question is, to you die hard trappers is- What conditions are best and worst weather wise for productivity? and what are the best times during the night for the most activity?
Thanks, Greg

The best conditions:
New Moon Calm Warm Humid
Worst Conditions: Full moon Cold Windy
The best times of night depend on what you're after. Some things fly early and others later. Female sats generally fly early (1-2 hours after dark) whereas males of many species fly much later (early am). I've found that between 11pm-1am overall numbers generally slow down, although certain things fly at that time, like Antheraea, Agapema, many different Notodontids. A lot of the scarabs fly early, but many of the cerambycids fly later. In my experience, lots of Sphingids and Catocalas fly all night long.
If you're looking for saturniids and you're only staying out to 10-11pm, you probably won't have much luck. Your chance of getting a male at your lights is much higher than a female and males of many species really only fly between 1-4am.
The two best times in a night for me usually are about the first 2 hours after dark. Then from about 1-3 am (daybreak is at about 4:20 am here).
