I saw this caterpillar crawling on a forest track near Slieve Kimalta in County Tipperary, Ireland. It is about 9 cm long. Anyone know what it is? Attachments:

Fox moth, Macrothylacia rubi. Overwinters as a fully grown larva, adults fly in May-June. Cheers AL.

I think it is a Drinker moth, Euthrix potatoria.

Dave, i can't see any tufts and seems a bit dull to be Drinker. Having said that the pale patches on sides lead me to doubt its a Fox moth. Perhaps its a Northern Eggar, Lasiocampa quercus f.callnae which overwinter in second year as pupa and would be fully grown now. If it had been found earlier in the year i would have said Oak Eggar Lasiocampa quercus. Cheers AL.

Hi Al, I enlarged the photo this time..DUH! Yes, I would agree with quercus f. callunae. It could possibly be L. trifolii though, about the right time for full-grown larvae of that too. Dave

Oops, just noticed the size, definitely quercus!
